Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on October 7 for extensive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The visit marks an important step in improving relations that had become strained after Muizzu assumed office last year.
Muizzu’s Visit to India President Muizzu arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for a four-day visit. Upon his arrival, he was received by PM Modi at Hyderabad House, where the two leaders engaged in talks about the future of India-Maldives relations. According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the meeting reflects the “special ties” between the two nations.
Before the official talks, Muizzu was given a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. He also visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Challenges in India-Maldives Relations This visit is significant as it is Muizzu’s first state visit to India since taking office in November 2023. His initial stance towards India was critical, with his presidential campaign based on the ‘India Out’ movement, which called for the removal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. Muizzu’s pro-China leanings further complicated the bilateral relationship.
The relationship took a downturn when Maldivian ministers publicly criticized PM Modi. However, Muizzu has since taken steps to repair relations, including dismissing ministers who were critical of India. His efforts to mend ties come at a time when the Maldives is facing economic difficulties.
India Extends Economic Support In a move to support the Maldivian economy, India has decided to extend vital budgetary assistance to the Maldives government. This includes the rollover of a USD 50 million Treasury Bill for another year, providing much-needed economic relief as the archipelago faces financial challenges.
Looking Ahead Muizzu’s visit signals a shift in Maldives’ foreign policy, with efforts to restore stronger relations with India. The discussions between PM Modi and President Muizzu indicate a renewed commitment to cooperation, despite past tensions. Both nations are expected to explore further collaboration in areas such as economic support, security, and regional stability.
