India Reaffirms Commitment to Maldives as PM Modi Engages Key Leaders

Male, Maldives – Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s dedication to strengthening its long-standing partnership with the Maldives during his two-day diplomatic visit. Meeting with top Maldivian leaders, including Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed and former President Mohamed Nasheed, Modi emphasized collaborative growth in infrastructure, technology, and climate resilience.

Deepening Bilateral Cooperation
During discussions with Maldivian officials, PM Modi highlighted the multifaceted nature of the India-Maldives relationship. “Our nations continue to work closely in critical sectors like infrastructure, energy, and climate change, which directly benefit our citizens,” he stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also expressed optimism about expanding this partnership in the coming years.

Boosting Parliamentary Ties
A significant focus of the visit was reinforcing legislative collaboration. Modi met with Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the Maldives’ People’s Majlis (Parliament), and welcomed the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group. “Our Parliaments share a deep-rooted connection, and this new group will further strengthen democratic exchanges,” he remarked.

Support for Development & Capacity Building
Reaffirming India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, Modi assured continued support for the Maldives through capacity-building initiatives and developmental aid. This commitment follows the announcement of a ₹4,850 crore line of credit for infrastructure and social projects during talks with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.

A Nod to Historical Ties
The Prime Minister also held a special meeting with former President Mohamed Nasheed, a vocal advocate for stronger India-Maldives relations. “The Maldives remains a valued partner in our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and broader vision for the Indian Ocean region,” Modi noted.

As both nations look ahead, this visit underscores a shared vision for stability, economic growth, and regional cooperation in South Asia.
