In a strategic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to commence his political campaign for the 2024 elections early, beginning with a tour of South India starting March 15. This marks a departure from his usual practice of hitting the campaign trail after the BJP candidates have filed their nominations, signaling the importance the party places on the southern states for the upcoming elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already released its first list of 195 candidates, well in advance of the Election Commission of India’s official announcement of the polls, with a second list anticipated shortly. This proactive approach underscores the significance of early campaigning, with the Prime Minister as the party’s leading advocate.
Modi’s itinerary is packed, with scheduled visits to Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, highlighting the BJP’s focus on consolidating its presence in the South. In Kerala, Modi will attend events in Pathanamthitta and Palakkad on March 15 and 17, respectively, where he will also participate in roadshows. BJP candidates Anil Antony (Pathanamthitta) and C Krishnakumar (Palakkad) are expected to benefit from the Prime Minister’s support.
The Prime Minister’s engagements will continue in Karnataka on March 15, with additional appearances on March 17 and 18, demonstrating the party’s commitment to making significant inroads in the state. Furthermore, Modi is slated to participate in several political events across Tamil Nadu between March 15 and 18, underlining the BJP’s strategic emphasis on the 129 seats in the southern states for the 2024 polls.
This early start to the political campaign by Prime Minister Modi highlights the BJP’s intent to maximize its outreach and influence across key southern states, aiming to secure a robust foothold in the region ahead of the next general elections.
