In a landmark event this Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a day-long visit to Arunachal Pradesh, where he inaugurated the Sela Tunnel, a pivotal development heralding a new era of connectivity and progress for the northeastern states. With an investment of ₹55,000 crore dedicated to developmental initiatives, the Prime Minister’s visit marks a significant step towards realizing the vision of a developed Northeast. Here’s what makes the Sela Tunnel, the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel at an elevation of 13,000 feet, a marvel of modern infrastructure and strategic importance:
- Engineering Excellence: Spearheaded by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the Sela Tunnel project was executed at a cost of ₹825 crore. It comprises two main tunnels, with Tunnel 1 extending over 1,003 meters and Tunnel 2, a twin-tube tunnel, spanning 1,595 meters. Accompanying these are two roads, cumulatively measuring 8.6 kilometers, designed to sustain a daily traffic flow of 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks, with a speed limit capped at 80 kmph.
- Strategic Significance: Beyond its infrastructural prowess, the tunnel is crucial for ensuring year-round connectivity to Tawang, a region of strategic importance near the Chinese border. The tunnel’s presence is expected to cut down travel time to Tawang by an hour, thereby accelerating the movement of troops, weaponry, and essential supplies close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
- Overcoming Natural Barriers: Nestled near the Sela Pass, the tunnel directly addresses the perennial challenge of road blockages due to snow and landslides, ensuring uninterrupted access to Tawang throughout the year.
- Benefits Beyond Borders: The operationalization of the Sela Tunnel promises to enhance the lives of Tawang’s residents by providing a reliable transportation route, irrespective of the season. It is also anticipated to boost tourism in the district and support the armed forces stationed in the region.
- Journey to Completion: The foundation stone for the Sela Tunnel was laid by PM Modi in February 2019, with an initial cost estimate of Rs 697 crore. However, the project faced delays due to several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, before reaching fruition.
The inauguration of the Sela Tunnel is more than just the unveiling of a physical structure; it symbolizes a gateway to prosperity, security, and unity for the northeastern region of India.
