The inauguration of the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi by PM Modi marks a significant moment, not just for the Indian community in the UAE but for cultural integration and architectural grandeur on a global scale. But what are the unique features of this temple that set it apart and symbolize a bridge of harmony between diverse cultures?
Nestled in Abu Dhabi, this traditional stone Hindu temple spans an impressive 27 acres, with half of this space dedicated to a meticulously planned parking area. The land for this architectural marvel was generously gifted by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, in 2019, underlining the deep-rooted friendship and mutual respect between India and the UAE. The temple’s construction, which cost over Rs 700 crore, showcases the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication behind this project, with 20,000 tonnes of stones and marble shipped in 700 containers from Rajasthan and Italy.
Standing tall at 108 feet, the temple’s design is a homage to the traditional Nagar style, featuring seven shikhars (spires) that represent the seven Emirates of the UAE. The temple’s exterior, adorned with pink sandstone, and its interior, embellished with Italian marble, speak volumes of the exquisite artistry involved. The temple houses two central domes, the Dome of Harmony and the Dome of Peace, which are adorned with carvings that emphasize the coexistence of humans with nature’s elements.
A notable feature is the Wall of Harmony, one of the largest 3D-printed walls in the UAE, which narrates the temple’s construction journey. This wall, along with the temple’s carvings and inscriptions in 30 different languages, celebrates the universal value of harmony.
The temple’s architectural brilliance has been recognized with awards, including the Best Mechanical Project of the Year 2019 and the Best Interior Design Concept of the Year 2020. Among its key architectural features are 96 bells and gaumukhs that pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life, and a special ‘Pillar of pillars’ that showcases around 1,400 small pillars carved into it.
The temple complex also includes an assembly hall capable of accommodating 3,000 people, a community center, exhibitions, classrooms, and a majlis venue, making it a hub for cultural and spiritual gatherings. Deities from all four corners of India are featured, alongside a ‘holy river’ that symbolizes the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, adding a spiritual dimension to the temple’s design.
