In an illustrious ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, upon five distinguished personalities. This year’s recipients include two esteemed former Prime Ministers, an agriculture scientist renowned for his contributions, and two prominent leaders known for their significant political and social impact. The ceremony, attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi among other dignitaries, was a testament to the nation’s recognition of exceptional service and dedication to India.
Former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh were posthumously awarded, acknowledging their pivotal roles in shaping modern India. Rao, remembered for his economic reforms and leadership during critical times, and Singh, celebrated for his advocacy for farmers and rural development, were represented by their family members who accepted the honors. Additionally, M S Swaminathan, hailed as the father of the Indian Green Revolution, and Karpoori Thakur, a stalwart of social justice and two-time Chief Minister of Bihar, were also honored posthumously for their indelible contributions.
The ceremony also acknowledged BJP veteran LK Advani, who will be awarded at his residence. Advani’s illustrious political career and his role in shaping the party and its ideologies have earned him this prestigious recognition. The awards ceremony highlighted the diverse contributions of the recipients across various fields, reinforcing the spirit of excellence and service to the nation.
