Parliament in Chaos Ahead of Pahalgam Attack Debate
The Rajya Sabha witnessed yet another day of heated protests and adjournments on Wednesday as Opposition leaders intensified demands for an immediate discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. The Upper House, which was scheduled to address legislative business, faced repeated disruptions, leading to an early adjournment—marking the second consecutive day of stalled proceedings.
Opposition’s Unrelenting Protests
Tensions flared from the moment the House convened at 11 AM, with Opposition MPs raising slogans and refusing to back down until their demands were met. Despite Deputy Chairman Harivansh’s appeal for order, 25 notices under Rule 267—seeking discussions on issues like Delhi slum demolitions, migrant worker rights, and air safety concerns—were rejected, further fueling the unrest.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was at the forefront, demanding the floor to speak on the Sindoor issue, while other MPs stormed the Well of the House, forcing presiding officer Bhubaneswar Kalita to adjourn proceedings for the day.
Rahul Gandhi’s Dig at Modi Over Trump’s Remarks
Adding to the political firestorm, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a sharp jab at the government after US President Donald Trump reiterated his claim of mediating a Kashmir ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
“The US President has made this statement 25 times, yet our Prime Minister hasn’t responded even once. What’s the deal? Who is Trump to decide a ceasefire for India?” Gandhi questioned, hinting at possible backchannel diplomacy.
Bills Introduced Amidst Disruptions
Despite the chaos, the Lok Sabha managed to introduce two key bills:
- The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025
- The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has begun preparations for the election of a new Vice-President following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation. An official announcement on the poll schedule is expected soon.
What’s Next?
With the 16-hour Rajya Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam slated for next Tuesday, all eyes are on whether the government will address the Opposition’s concerns—or if another round of protests will derail Parliament’s agenda once again.
