- Terrifying Mortality: Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) can be fatal within 48 hours, with a mortality rate of 30%.
- Rapid Spread: Japan has reported 977 cases by June 2, 2024, surpassing last year’s total and potentially reaching 2,500 cases this year.
- Symptoms and Risks: Severe symptoms include limb pain, swelling, fever, low blood pressure, necrosis, breathing issues, organ failure, and death, particularly affecting people over 50.
Why is this happening? After lifting COVID-19 restrictions, Japan has seen a surge in STSS cases, a rare but deadly disease caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS). This bacterium typically causes mild illnesses like strep throat in children, but certain strains can rapidly escalate to life-threatening conditions. The symptoms can quickly worsen, with swelling spreading from the foot to the knee in just a few hours and death potentially occurring within 48 hours.
Preventive Measures and Global Concern Countries in Europe have also reported increased cases of invasive Group A streptococcus (iGAS) diseases, including STSS. Health experts emphasize the importance of maintaining good hand hygiene and properly treating open wounds. GAS can be carried in the intestines, potentially contaminating hands through feces, which underscores the need for diligent hygiene practices.
Urgent Need for Awareness Professor Ken Kikuchi from Tokyo Women’s Medical University highlights the critical nature of this disease and the importance of public awareness and preventive measures to combat its spread. With the potential for a significant number of cases and a high mortality rate, it is crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect oneself and others from this severe bacterial infection.
