- The Supreme Court has directed the Allahabad HC Chief Justice to withhold judicial work from Justice Yashwant Varma.
- Justice Varma was recently transferred from the Delhi HC to the Allahabad HC following an inquiry into alleged cash discovery at his residence.
- The Allahabad HC Bar Association is protesting his transfer with an indefinite strike.
What Led to This Decision?
The controversy began after a fire broke out at Justice Yashwant Varma’s Lutyens’ Delhi residence on March 14. During the investigation, reports suggested that semi-burnt wads of cash were discovered at the scene, prompting an in-house inquiry by a three-member Supreme Court committee on March 22.
On Friday, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Varma’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court, and the government officially confirmed it under Article 222 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court also ordered that he be relieved of judicial duties for now while the inquiry continues.
Justice Varma’s Response & Legal Developments
Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoing, stating that neither he nor his family placed any cash at the residence. Despite this, the Supreme Court declined to register an FIR against him, calling the matter premature since the in-house inquiry is still ongoing. The court clarified that further legal actions will depend on the inquiry’s findings.
Protests & Bar Association’s Reaction
Justice Varma’s transfer has triggered strong opposition from the Allahabad High Court Bar Association, which has launched an indefinite strike in protest. Lawyers argue that the transfer under these circumstances raises concerns about judicial independence and due process.
With the inquiry ongoing, the legal community is watching closely. Will the findings clear Justice Varma’s name, or will they lead to more serious action?
