Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, seeking a fourth consecutive term as the Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, has declared assets totaling over Rs 55 crore. According to the affidavit filed alongside his nomination papers, Tharoor has disclosed a yearly income exceeding Rs 4.32 crore for the financial year 2022-2023.
Detailing his wealth, Tharoor’s movable assets are valued at over Rs 49 crore, which includes deposits in 19 bank accounts and investments in bonds, debentures, and mutual funds, among others. His declaration also highlights 534 grams of gold, valued at Rs 32 lakh, and Rs 36,000 in cash.
In terms of immovable assets, Tharoor’s holdings are pegged at more than Rs 6.75 crore. This includes a one-fourth share, inherited and currently valued at Rs 1.56 lakh, in a 2.51-acre agricultural land in Palakkad. Additionally, he owns a 10.47-acre land in Thiruvananthapuram, presently worth over Rs 6.20 crore, alongside a residential property in the state capital estimated at around Rs 52 lakh.
The Congress MP, who owns two cars – a Maruti Ciaz and a Maruti XL6, has a distinguished academic background with a PhD in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University, USA) and a Doctor of Letters in International Affairs (Honorary) from the University of Puget Sound, USA.
Tharoor finds himself named in nine cases across India, primarily for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups, alongside a case in Kerala related to unlawful assembly and rioting. He is also involved in four court cases, including two defamation suits—one in Kerala and another in Delhi—and another case in Kolkata for allegedly promoting enmity between groups.
The significant increase in Tharoor’s declared assets—from over Rs 23 crore in 2014 to more than Rs 35 crore in 2019, and now over Rs 55 crore—marks a notable escalation in his financial disclosure over the years.
