Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s much-anticipated horror-comedy Stree 2 has proven to be a massive box office success, despite facing a dip in collections due to heavy rainfall in various parts of India. The film opened with a strong Rs 55.40 crore on its first day and continued to gain momentum, amassing Rs 204 crore over its opening weekend. By the end of its first week, the film had collected an impressive Rs 307.80 crore.
In its second week, Stree 2 continued to pull in significant numbers, earning Rs 19.30 crore on its second Friday, Rs 33.80 crore on its second Saturday, Rs 40.75 crore on its second Sunday, Rs 20.20 crore on its second Monday, and Rs 12.25 crore on its second Tuesday. These figures brought the total India box office collection to a staggering Rs 434.10 crore by day 13.
According to film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film’s achievement of maintaining double-digit earnings for 13 consecutive days is remarkable, especially in the current box office environment. He noted that no other Hindi film released in 2024 has managed to achieve this feat. Stree 2 has now equaled the lifetime collections of the Hindi version of KGF: Chapter 2, which grossed Rs 434.70 crore during its eight-week run.
Adarsh further mentioned that Stree 2 is on track to reach the Rs 500 crore mark in net domestic box office collections. The film’s strong performance is partially attributed to the lack of significant competition, which has given it an edge over other recent releases, such as Gadar 2. According to trade portal Sacnilk, Stree 2 is performing better than Gadar 2 because of this advantage.
In addition to its box office success, Stree 2 has sparked interest in the future direction of the franchise. Writer Niren Bhatt recently revealed that the backstory of Shraddha Kapoor’s character will be explored in upcoming films, including the revelation of her character as Stree’s daughter, which explains why her name was not disclosed in either Stree or Stree 2.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 continues the story from the 2018 film Stree, focusing on the efforts of Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) and his friends to save Chanderi from the new threat of Sarkata’s horror. The film also features Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana in key roles. Released on Independence Day 2024, Stree 2 faced competition from other major releases like Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, John Abraham and Sharvari Wagh’s Vedaa, and Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan, but it has clearly held its own, emerging as a blockbuster hit.
