Tesla’s India Entry: Model Y Priced from ₹60 Lakh, Bookings Open
After years of speculation and lobbying for lower import duties, Elon Musk’s Tesla has finally made its India debut with the Model Y, the world’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in 2023 and 2024. The American automaker has opened bookings on its official website, with deliveries set to begin this quarter.
Pricing & Variants
The base rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Model Y, offering a 500 km range, starts at ₹59.89 lakh, while the Long Range variant, with an extended 622 km range, is priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). Both models come with 60 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs, respectively.
Performance-wise, the Model Y accelerates from 0-100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds (5.6 seconds for the Long Range version), with a top speed of 201 kmph.
Why Is Tesla Costlier in India?
Unlike in the US (₹38.6 lakh), China (₹30.5 lakh), or Germany (₹46 lakh), Tesla’s India pricing is significantly higher due to 100% import duties on fully-built units (CBUs). The vehicles will be shipped from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai.
Charging Infrastructure & Experience Centres
To support its India rollout, Tesla has inaugurated its first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), inaugurated by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. The company is also setting up 16 supercharging points and 16 destination chargers across Mumbai and Delhi NCR before deliveries begin.
Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Director for South East Asia, emphasized that Tesla is “not just a car but a bold step for clean mobility.” She highlighted the Model Y’s AI-driven updates, over-the-air software enhancements, and self-driving capabilities as key differentiators.
What’s Next for Tesla in India?
With over 8 million EVs sold globally, Tesla is betting big on India’s evolving EV market. While initial pricing remains steep, the company’s long-term plans include expanding charging networks and local manufacturing. For now, Indian buyers can experience the Model Y’s futuristic design and cutting-edge tech at Tesla’s Mumbai showroom.
Will Tesla’s premium pricing strategy pay off, or will Indian consumers wait for more affordable options? Only time—and sales figures—will tell.
