In a significant development, the US Senate has passed a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, ensuring continued support in the ongoing conflict with Russia. This approval follows the House of Representatives’ endorsement and is part of a larger $95 billion assistance package that also benefits allies like Israel and Taiwan.
President Joe Biden has vowed a rapid deployment of arms to Ukraine, stating, “I will sign this bill into law and address the American people as soon as it reaches my desk tomorrow so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week.” His statement emphasizes the United States’ commitment to democracy and freedom, and its opposition to tyranny and oppression.
The passage of this bill marks a critical juncture after prolonged delays which had seen some opposition from House Republicans. These delays have coincided with intensified Russian military actions, putting the Ukrainian forces under severe strain.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude towards the US Senate and the bipartisan effort that led to the passing of the aid package. He specifically thanked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for their leadership. “I equally appreciate President Biden’s support and look forward to the bill being signed soon and the next military aid package matching the resoluteness that I always see in our negotiations,” said Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian President also highlighted the crucial need for long-range capabilities, artillery, and air defense systems to restore peace in the region. This aid package is seen as a vital step in bolstering Ukraine’s defenses against the ongoing Russian aggression and underscores the strategic support provided by the United States in the geopolitical landscape.
