VinFast Powers Up India’s EV Market with Tamil Nadu Plant
Vietnam’s electric vehicle (EV) giant, VinFast, has officially inaugurated its first Indian manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The sprawling 400-acre plant, situated in the SIPCOT Industrial Park, marks a pivotal step in the company’s global expansion—becoming its third operational facility and the first outside Vietnam.
The new hub is designed to strengthen VinFast’s foothold in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets. Equipped with advanced workshops—including Body Shop, Paint Shop, and a Logistics Hub—the plant will initially assemble two electric SUVs: the VF 7 and VF 6, targeting an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles, scalable to 150,000 as demand rises.
Boosting Jobs & Tamil Nadu’s EV Ambitions
Beyond vehicle production, the facility is set to create 3,000-3,500 direct jobs, with thousands more expected in the supply chain. VinFast’s investment aligns with Tamil Nadu’s vision to become South Asia’s EV capital, fostering economic growth and sustainable mobility.
Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, emphasized the plant’s strategic importance:
“This facility lays the foundation for VinFast’s long-term growth in India. We aim to deliver high-quality, affordable EVs while transforming Tamil Nadu into an export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.”
Aiming for 1 Million EVs by 2030
The Tamil Nadu plant is a crucial piece in VinFast’s ambitious roadmap—targeting 200,000 annual sales by 2025 and 1 million by 2030. The company is also building a comprehensive EV ecosystem, partnering with local dealers, service providers like myTVS and RoadGrid, and battery recycler BatX Energies to ensure sustainability.
With VinFast accelerating India’s EV revolution, the big question remains: Will Tesla fast-track its own India plans in response?
