- Indonesia banned Apple’s iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10, citing Apple’s unfulfilled investment commitments.
- The missing International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certification prevents these devices from being legally sold or used in the country.
- Apple has not yet responded, leaving uncertainty about the future availability of these devices in Indonesia.
Why Would Indonesia Ban Such Popular Devices?
Indonesia’s decision to ban Apple’s iPhone 16 series and Apple Watch Series 10 comes down to unmet investment promises. Apple initially pledged to invest around IDR 1.71 trillion (roughly $114 million) in research and development within Indonesia to meet local content requirements. However, with a shortfall of around $14.75 million, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry has withheld the IMEI certification. Without this certification, devices like the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10 can’t be sold or operated legally in Indonesia.
Moreover, Indonesia’s Domestic Component Level (TKDN) regulations require foreign tech companies to have at least 40% local content in products sold within the country, which can include local manufacturing or research and development facilities. Apple’s delayed investment failed to meet these local content rules, leading to the current ban.
What Does This Mean for iPhone Users in Indonesia?
For now, those in Indonesia won’t be able to buy or use the iPhone 16 or Apple Watch Series 10, but tourists and airline crew can bring up to two devices for personal use. However, these devices can’t be sold locally, and doing so would break the ban.
With no response from Apple yet, it remains uncertain whether they will meet the remaining investment to lift the ban. As long as the financial commitments remain incomplete, the ban will likely continue, leaving many potential users disappointed.
In the meantime, the ban reflects Indonesia’s dedication to upholding its local content regulations and investment policies for foreign companies, emphasizing the importance of partnerships that also support domestic development.
