The World Crafts Forum 2024 started in New Delhi with great success, celebrating 60 years of the World Crafts Council. Held at the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy, the event focuses on collaboration, sustainability, and innovation in the crafts sector.
The day began with a roundtable on crafts and sustainability, discussing how crafts support cultural preservation and economic development. The opening ceremony featured Chief Guest Shri Pabitra Margherita, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, who highlighted the importance of crafts to India’s culture and economy. He praised artisans for preserving tradition and driving innovation.
Speakers like Rohit Kansal, IAS, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, emphasized creating new opportunities for artisans and strengthening the craft ecosystem. WCC President Saad Al-Qaddumi and UNESCO Director Tim Curtis stressed global collaboration and preserving crafts for sustainable development.
The event also included a panel on supporting craft start-ups, cultural performances, and the inauguration of the EPCH Gallery showcasing India’s best crafts. Films on traditional weaving techniques from regions like Banaras and Pochampally added depth to the celebration.
