  • India is negotiating a Rs 10,000 crore deal with Russia to purchase additional missiles for its S-400 air defence systems.
  • The acquisition aims to build a robust missile inventory to ensure the S-400 regiments are fully operational and combat-ready.
  • This move will significantly enhance India’s ability to counter aerial threats from fighter jets, missiles, and drones at long ranges.

NEW DELHI: In a strategic push to fully activate its formidable S-400 Triumf air defence shield, the Indian government is engaged in high-level talks with Russia to procure a new batch of specialized missiles, sources close to the development have revealed to AlwaysFirst. The potential deal, estimated to be worth a staggering Rs 10,000 crore, is seen as the critical next step in unlocking the complete potential of the game-changing system.

According to insiders familiar with the negotiations, the discussions are centered on acquiring various types of interceptor missiles that form the core of the S-400’s multi-layered defence network. While India has already received and deployed several S-400 units along its sensitive borders, a comprehensive and diverse missile inventory is essential to make these regiments fully operational for a wide spectrum of threats.

“The S-400 system is like a world-class sports car. To win races, you need the right fuel and the right tires. These missiles are exactly that—the essential components that allow the system to perform at its peak,” a senior defence official explained on the condition of anonymity. The move is not about buying new systems, but about building a sufficient reserve of ammunition to ensure sustained operational readiness in the event of heightened tensions or conflict.

The S-400 Triumf, one of the most advanced air defence systems globally, is capable of engaging a variety of targets simultaneously, including stealth aircraft, ballistic missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. By integrating different types of missiles for short, medium, and long-range engagements, it creates an impenetrable defensive bubble.

This proposed acquisition underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its air defence capabilities amid a complex regional security environment. If finalized, the Rs 10,000 crore missile deal will provide the Indian Air Force with the sustained firepower needed to dominate the skies and deter potential adversaries, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s military modernization journey.
