Tamil Nadu’s Brihadeeswara Temple has once again captured global attention after industrialist Anand Mahindra shared his admiration for the monument on social media. Mahindra described the nearly 1,000-year-old temple as one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of the ancient world, sparking widespread discussion and interest across digital platforms.
Built under the reign of Chola emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 CE, the Brihadeeswara Temple stands in the historic city of Thanjavur and is a signature example of Dravidian architecture and sacred design. Its massive granite structure, towering spire and intricate carvings make it one of the most striking ancient monuments in India.
What continues to astonish historians, architects and modern engineers is the way the entire temple complex was constructed. The massive stones were interlocked with precision, without the use of modern cement or mortar, allowing the structure to endure through centuries of weathering and even seismic shifts.
The temple is dominated by a towering vimana above the sanctum, which stands over 216 feet tall and holds one of the largest granite finial stones, weighing close to 80 tonnes. Inside the sacred precinct, visitors encounter one of India’s largest Shiva lingams along with a grand Nandi statue carved from a single stone. The complex also includes shrines dedicated to other deities, reflecting its spiritual and artistic richness.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group called the Great Living Chola Temples, Brihadeeswara is not merely an archaeological relic but a living place of worship and cultural heritage.
