  • The entry-level Sigma variant of the Maruti Grand Vitara with a factory-fitted CNG kit has been spotted at dealerships ahead of an official launch.
  • This move will make the strong-hybrid capable SUV more affordable, potentially bringing its starting price below key competitors.
  • It is expected to deliver a best-in-class fuel efficiency of over 26 km/kg, combining SUV appeal with running cost savings.

NEW DELHI, India – In a strategic maneuver that is set to intensify the competition in the fiercely contested mid-size SUV segment, Maruti Suzuki has begun dispatching the base CNG variant of its flagship model, the Grand Vitara, to dealerships across the country. Multiple sightings of the Sigma trim equipped with a factory-fitted S-CNG kit confirm the company’s plan to make its premium offering accessible to a wider, cost-conscious audience.

The arrival of the Grand Vitara Sigma CNG is a significant development. Until now, the CNG option was available only on the higher Delta and Zeta trims. By introducing it on the base variant, Maruti Suzuki is effectively creating a new entry point for buyers seeking the space and stature of an SUV but with the unparalleled fuel economy of compressed natural gas. Industry analysts see this as a direct challenge to the dominance of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

While official figures are yet to be released, the Grand Vitara CNG is expected to retain the 1.5-litre K-series dual-jet petrol engine that powers the existing CNG models. This engine is renowned for its reliability and efficiency, and in the higher variants, it delivers an impressive mileage of 26.6 km/kg. The Sigma CNG variant will likely offer a similar figure, making it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class.

The primary advantage of this new variant is affordability. The current Grand Vitara CNG range starts with the Delta trim. The introduction of the Sigma CNG will lower this starting price significantly, potentially bringing it well under the ₹. 15 lakh (ex-showroom) mark. This positions the Grand Vitara as a formidable alternative not just to other SUVs, but also to premium hatchbacks and sedans, offering a unique proposition of “SUV appeal with hatchback-like running costs.”

With this move, Maruti Suzuki is leveraging its strength in CNG technology to capture a larger share of the market. The official launch is expected imminently, and it could trigger a new price war in a segment where value for money is a key purchasing decision. For countless Indian families, the dream of owning a full-sized, feature-rich SUV that is gentle on the wallet may have just inched closer to reality.
