A shocking assault on a Hindu trader in Bangladesh has ended in his death, raising alarm about rising mob violence and the safety of minority communities in the country. Khokon Chandra Das, 50, succumbed to severe injuries on Saturday morning at the National Burn Institute in Dhaka after being battered, stabbed, and set on fire by a mob late last month.
The attack occurred on the night of December 31 near Keurbhanga Bazar in the Damudya area of Shariatpur district, where Das operated a pharmacy and mobile banking service. He had closed his shop and was returning home when a group of assailants intercepted his autorickshaw, dragged him out, assaulted him with sharp weapons, and doused him with petrol before igniting the flames.
In a desperate bid to save his life, Das plunged into a nearby roadside pond, which helped extinguish much of the fire. Villagers who heard his cries rushed to his aid and transported him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to a specialist burn unit in Dhaka. Despite intensive care, doctors confirmed he passed away after nearly three days of treatment.
Hospital officials reported that roughly thirty percent of his body suffered burns, including severe damage to his face and respiratory system. Authorities are in the process of finalising arrangements to return his body to his native village for last rites.
Police have identified two suspects believed to be involved in the attack and say efforts are underway to bring them into custody. Family members have urged law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that all responsible are held to account.
The killing has intensified concerns over a pattern of violent incidents targeting minority Hindus in Bangladesh. In recent weeks, several attacks against members of the Hindu community have been reported, including other brutal mob assaults, fuelling broader debate about communal tensions and public safety.
Local residents and civil rights advocates have condemned the attack and called for stronger measures to protect vulnerable populations as authorities continue their probe into this tragic incident.
