NEW DELHI, India – In a bid to tackle the capital’s escalating air pollution and settle hazardous dust clouds, authorities had pinned hopes on a modern weather-modification technique: cloud seeding. However, the much-anticipated trials, led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, never got off the ground. The reason, as it turns out, wasn’t a flaw in the science, but a simple lack of cooperation from the skies above.
According to Professor S. Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, the ambitious project faced an insurmountable natural barrier. For cloud seeding to be successful, the atmosphere must present very specific, ripe conditions. “The key requirement is the presence of clouds that are moisture-filled and ready to precipitate. You cannot seed a clear, blue sky or even just any cloud,” Professor Ganesh explained. The trials, which required precise permissions and coordination, were repeatedly stymied by the absence of these perfect meteorological ingredients.
The science of cloud seeding involves introducing tiny particles, often silver iodide or salt flares, into certain types of clouds. These particles act as nuclei around which water vapor can condense, eventually becoming heavy enough to fall as rain. However, as the IIT Kanpur team discovered, Delhi’s weather during the proposed trial period was missing two crucial components.
“First, there were simply not enough ‘seedable’ clouds present in the region,” a project scientist stated. “Second, even when some promising clouds were spotted, the wind patterns and atmospheric instability were not conducive for the aircraft to carry out the operation safely and effectively.” This highlights a critical challenge often overlooked in public discourse: cloud seeding is not about creating rain from scratch, but about encouraging existing, promising clouds to release their moisture more efficiently.
The failed attempt underscores the complex interplay between human ingenuity and natural forces. While the technology holds promise for water-scarce regions and pollution control, the Delhi case serves as a stark reminder that its success is entirely contingent on the whims of the weather. For now, the capital’s quest for cleaner air through artificial rain remains on hold, waiting for the clouds to align—both literally and metaphorically.
