The action is part of a broader enforcement effort under the recently implemented Online Gaming framework that seeks to regulate the rapidly expanding digital gaming sector while protecting citizens from harmful online practices.
Officials said the latest block order targets unregulated platforms that were offering unauthorized real-money betting services to Indian users without valid licensing or oversight. These sites have drawn scrutiny over their role in facilitating gambling addiction, financial losses, and social problems, particularly among younger internet users.
This development follows sustained enforcement since the passage of the Online Gaming Act, which came into effect in October 2025. According to government sources, the total number of illegal betting and gambling websites blocked so far exceeds 7,800, a figure that underscores the scale of unregulated activity in the sector.
Under the new legal framework, authorities have strengthened powers to identify and take down offshore and domestic sites that operate in violation of Indian law. Technology and monitoring mechanisms are being deployed to prevent mirror domains, proxy URLs, and related channels from reaching users inside the country.
