NEW DELHI, India – In a unanimous decision that marks a new chapter for management education in the region, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a crucial bill to formally establish the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. The Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023, received cross-party support, underscoring its national significance.

The legislation amends the principal IIM Act of 2017, effectively integrating IIM Guwahati into the framework that governs all other IIMs across the country. The most impactful outcome of this bill is the grant of the prestigious “Institutes of National Importance” status to IIM Guwahati.

This status is far more than a mere title. It empowers the institute with the legal authority to award full-fledged degrees, specifically Master of Business Administration (MBA) and PhD programs, to its graduates. Previously, despite their rigorous curriculum and stellar reputation, IIMs could only issue diplomas. This move aligns India’s premier B-schools with international standards, ensuring their degrees are recognized globally and enhancing the value for their alumni.

The bill was introduced by the Union Education Minister, who highlighted its importance in bolstering the educational landscape of the Northeast. The establishment of a full-fledged IIM in Guwahati is envisioned as a catalyst for economic and academic growth, aiming to nurture top-tier managerial talent from within the region and retain it for local industry development.

The passage of the bill in the Lower House paves the way for its introduction in the Rajya Sabha. Upon clearing Parliament and receiving the President’s assent, the bill will become law, formally cementing IIM Guwahati’s position as a powerhouse of management education and a beacon of opportunity in India’s northeastern states.
