Kanpur, India — A district court in Kanpur has rejected a surrender application from a 45-year-old man who claimed he was driving a Lamborghini sports car when it crashed into pedestrians and other vehicles earlier this week. The court also declined to release the luxury vehicle, keeping it in police custody amid ongoing investigations.
The accused, identified as Mohan, appeared before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court with his legal counsel and filed two applications. One sought to surrender for judicial custody on the basis that he was behind the wheel at the time of the incident. The other sought the release of the seized Lamborghini Revuelto, reportedly worth more than Rs 10 crore.
During the hearing, the prosecution informed the court that police records did not list Mohan as an accused or a person of interest, and that his name had not emerged in the FIR or during the investigation. Instead, law enforcement officials have maintained that evidence—including CCTV footage and statements from eyewitnesses—points to the vehicle being driven by the owner’s son, identified by police as Shivam Mishra.
The court agreed with the police position and rejected the surrender plea on the grounds that Mohan was not named or wanted in the case. It also asked the vehicle’s owner to provide all relevant car documents to the investigating officer and directed authorities to submit a technical evaluation report before considering any application for the return of the Lamborghini.
Mohan and his defence team have maintained that his version of events will be challenged at a higher court, arguing that video recordings and initial police statements should not determine guilt at this stage. Meanwhile, police have said the investigation is continuing and that a formal charge sheet is likely once forensic and technical analyses are complete.
The case has garnered widespread public attention due to the involvement of an expensive exotic car and the conflicting narratives surrounding the accident. With legal proceedings ongoing, it remains unclear who will be formally held responsible as the matter heads toward further judicial review.
