KYIV, UKRAINE – A devastating wave of Russian missiles and drones struck targets across Ukraine overnight, plunging cities into darkness and igniting fires in a coordinated assault on the country’s energy grid. Ukrainian authorities have confirmed at least three people were killed and more than a dozen wounded in one of the largest aerial barrages in recent months.
The attack utilized a complex mix of weaponry, including cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones, overwhelming air defenses in several regions. Powerful explosions echoed through the capital, Kyiv, shaking buildings and sending residents into shelters.
“This was one of the largest combined attacks on Ukraine’s energy system this year,” a senior energy official stated, highlighting the strategic focus of the bombardment. Thermal power and hydroelectric plants in central and western Ukraine were reported to have sustained significant damage, raising fears of prolonged power outages for civilians as the country approaches winter.
In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, a critical energy facility was hit, resulting in a serious fire. Tragically, the strike also claimed the lives of three employees at the site and left several others injured. Rescue operations continued through the early hours to contain the blazes and search for any individuals trapped under rubble.
Despite the scale of the offensive, Ukrainian air force command reported a significant number of successful interceptions. Officials stated that air defense units managed to shoot down dozens of cruise missiles and a majority of the attack drones launched during the intense, hours-long aerial battle.
The large-scale attack marks a severe intensification of Russia’s campaign to degrade Ukrainian infrastructure and morale. As emergency crews work to assess the full extent of the damage and restore vital services, the international community watches closely, with Ukraine reiterating its urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities to protect its cities and critical civilian sites from such devastating assaults.
