  • Indian visa services at the Chittagong centre have been suspended indefinitely due to a security incident.
  • The decision comes amid widespread protests and violence linked to internal unrest in Bangladesh.
  • Resumption of visa processing will depend on security assessments by Indian diplomatic authorities.

India has moved to suspend visa services at its Visa Application Centre in Chittagong, Bangladesh, citing a recent security incident that raised serious concerns for the safety of staff and applicants. The suspension came into effect on December 21 and will remain in place until local conditions are deemed secure enough to resume operations.

The Indian Visa Application Centre, which handles visa processing in the key port city, confirmed in a statement that all visa operations had been halted with immediate effect. The centre said the decision was taken after a security lapse occurred at the nearby Assistant High Commission of India, prompting a reassessment of risks.

This development unfolds against a backdrop of escalating unrest in Bangladesh, where political violence and protests have surged in recent days. Demonstrations and clashes linked to broader national discontent have at times targeted foreign diplomatic missions, contributing to a climate of instability that has alarmed Indian officials.

Indian authorities have stressed that the suspension of visa services is a precautionary step focused on safety rather than a political statement. A spokesperson noted that services at Chittagong will only restart once a thorough evaluation of the security situation has been completed.

The decision has also triggered reciprocal actions, with Bangladesh temporarily halting visa and consular services at its mission in New Delhi. Dhaka said the suspension was due to “unavoidable circumstances,” underscoring how bilateral tensions have intensified in the wake of the unrest and the diplomatic standoff.

Analysts say the suspension of visa operations highlights the growing challenges faced by diplomatic missions in maintaining normal services amid volatile street protests and internal political pressure within Bangladesh. Both countries have maintained official lines of communication, but the situation remains delicate as each side navigates the fallout from recent events.
