Tamil cinema star and political leader Vijay is currently in the spotlight for reasons beyond films and politics. In a surprising turn of events, his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam has reportedly approached a family court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, seeking dissolution of their marriage.
According to reports, the divorce petition has been filed under the Special Marriage Act. The plea allegedly mentions persistent mental cruelty, neglect and desertion as key reasons for seeking separation. It also refers to claims of an alleged extramarital relationship involving the actor, which has been cited as a contributing factor to the breakdown of the marriage.
The couple, who tied the knot in August 1999, have shared more than two decades together and are parents to two children. Over the years, Sangeetha Sornalingam has largely maintained a private life away from media attention despite her husband’s immense popularity in both cinema and public life.
Legal proceedings are now underway, with reports suggesting that the case has been transferred to the appropriate family court for further review. The petition also seeks residential rights at the matrimonial home and permanent alimony as part of the settlement process.
The development has sparked widespread discussion across the Tamil film industry as well as political circles, especially at a time when Vijay has been actively shaping his political journey in Tamil Nadu.
As of now, there has been no official public response from the actor regarding the ongoing legal matter.
