- Jana Nayagan will not premiere on January 9 as originally planned.
- Delay stems from pending certification clearance and legal proceedings.
- New release date is yet to be announced by the production and distributors.
The much-anticipated Tamil political thriller Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay in what is expected to be his final cinematic role, will not release on January 9 as initially scheduled. The decision to postpone the launch comes amid ongoing certification challenges and legal review, which have left the film’s clearance in limbo.
Originally slated to hit theatres during the lucrative Sankranti holiday period, Jana Nayagan generated strong pre-release buzz, with advance bookings opened in multiple regions. But despite the momentum, the Central Board of Film Certification has yet to formally issue the required certification, prompting uncertainty over the scheduled premiere. The matter was brought before the Madras High Court, which has reserved its judgment after hearing arguments from both sides, leaving the film’s fate unresolved just days before its intended release.
Distributors handling the release in international markets including Malaysia and the United States have confirmed that planned release dates have been put on hold due to these unforeseen circumstances. Statements from the overseas distribution partners explained that once the production team finalises a revised release plan, updates will be shared across official channels. Refunds are being processed where tickets had already been booked.
The certification delay follows reports that the Board referred the film to a revising committee after a third-party complaint, even after initial approval was communicated by an examining body. Producers of Jana Nayagan argue they addressed all feedback and completed required adjustments, yet the formal certificate is still pending. This development comes as a blow to fans eagerly waiting for Vijay’s last major cinematic outing before his full transition into politics.
As audiences and industry insiders watch closely, the production has not yet disclosed a fresh release date. Statements from the team stress patience while regulatory processes are completed, and assure supporters that the film will reach cinemas once all hurdles are cleared.
