  • TMC declines to sign no-confidence motion notice, advocating a grievance letter to Speaker Om Birla first.
  • Opposition accusing the Speaker of bias and procedural unfairness, including denial of speaking time to key leaders.
  • The move reveals strategic differences within the INDIA bloc over how to address parliamentary disputes.

New Delhi Democratic tensions surfaced in Parliament on Tuesday as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) made clear it will not immediately sign on to a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While opposition parties including the Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the DMK have filed the motion accusing Birla of partial conduct, TMC leaders urged a different route first.

TMC’s national general-secretary Abhishek Banerjee told reporters in the Parliament House complex that his party does not oppose raising concerns about the Speaker’s conduct. However, Banerjee said the opposition should first formally communicate its grievances to Birla in writing. This letter would outline issues such as the suspension of eight opposition MPs and allegations that key opposition figures were denied a fair chance to speak. TMC wants to allow the Speaker an opportunity to review and respond before any drastic parliamentary action is taken.

According to sources and parliamentary records, the no-confidence notice submitted earlier in the day has garnered signatures from more than 100 Members of Parliament. The motion claims Birla has acted in a “blatantly partisan” manner, particularly during debates such as the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, and has failed to maintain decorum and equal opportunity in the House.

The strategic pause signaled by TMC reflects some discord within the INDIA bloc over how best to tackle perceived procedural injustices. While the Congress and several allied parties are prepared to push forward with the motion immediately, TMC’s stance underscores a preference for procedural fairness and dialogue before taking what is seen as a confrontational step.

Political analysts say this development could influence parliamentary momentum in the ongoing Budget Session, as both sides weigh constitutional tools and public perception in navigating the showdown with the Speaker. Opposition leaders maintain that enforcing accountability in the House is essential, while TMC argues that reaching out for corrective action first could preserve parliamentary norms and unity.
