India’s campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed a worrying development during the Group A fixture against the Netherlands as opener Abhishek Sharma failed to score yet again. The young batter was dismissed for a duck in the very first over of the innings, marking his third consecutive zero in the ongoing tournament.
The left handed opener’s struggles continued after Netherlands off spinner Aryan Dutt removed him cheaply, leaving India searching for stability at the top. So far in the tournament, Sharma is yet to get off the mark despite facing multiple deliveries across matches, raising serious concerns about his current form heading into the knockout phase.
With this dismissal, Sharma has now equalled an unwanted Indian record previously held by Sanju Samson for the most ducks recorded by an Indian batter in T20 internationals within a calendar year. The repeated failures have intensified debates around India’s opening combination as the team prepares for the crucial Super 8 stage.
While India remains firmly in contention in the tournament, the team management could be forced to rethink its batting strategy. Samson’s experience and ability to accelerate the innings make him a viable alternative if the think tank decides to make changes ahead of the next round.
