  • Questions mount over police reaction as community demands accountability.

SYDNEY A survivor of the terror shooting at Bondi Beach has publicly questioned the actions of responding police officers, saying they appeared to hesitate while gunmen continued firing at a crowded Hanukkah event.

The deadly attack unfolded on Sunday evening at the popular Bondi Beach area in Sydney, where families and festival-goers had gathered to mark the start of the Jewish holiday. Witnesses recalled scenes of chaos as two armed men opened fire from an elevated position near a pedestrian bridge, sending people diving for cover and scrambling in panic. Officials have since confirmed that at least 12 people were killed and nearly 30 more were wounded, including two police officers. Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist incident targeted at the Jewish community.

Among those who survived the carnage was an attendee who later criticized the initial response by law enforcement. The survivor described a prolonged period in which gunfire continued while officers on the scene did not immediately engage the attackers. Other witnesses also said the assault seemed to go on at length before officers confronted the suspects. These comments have intensified scrutiny of how the situation was handled by first responders.

The violent spree began in the early evening when shooters began firing into the crowd assembled near Archer Park for the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration. Video footage circulating online captured the terrifying moments as gunshots echoed and people ran for safety, with some seeking shelter in nearby businesses and behind vehicles. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and local hospitals treated scores of injured victims.

Amid the turmoil, dramatic visuals shared widely show an unarmed bystander confronting one of the gunmen. The individual tackled and disarmed an attacker, actions that officials said likely prevented further loss of life. That civilian was later hospitalized with non-fatal injuries and has been praised for his courage in the face of overwhelming danger.

Police subsequently neutralized one shooter at the scene and took another suspect into custody. Authorities also discovered and rendered safe improvised explosive devices in the vicinity as part of the extended security operation. The investigation remains active and is being led by counter-terror specialists. The Economic Times

National and local leaders have condemned the attack, with Australia’s prime minister describing it as a troubling act of hatred that struck at the heart of community life. Calls for unity and support for victims are growing across Sydney and beyond as the city enters a period of mourning and reflection.
