  • A viral Chennai restaurant bill showed a ₹9.52 “gas charge” added to idli and vada orders.
  • Social media users debated whether eateries had started charging customers for LPG usage.
  • Fact checks later revealed the receipt was fake and likely AI-generated.

A restaurant bill from Chennai recently stirred a heated online debate after it appeared to include a separate “gas charge” for cooking food items like idli and medu vada. The image quickly went viral across social media platforms, with many users expressing shock that restaurants might start itemizing cooking fuel costs on customer bills.

The receipt, reportedly from an eatery in the Perungudi area of Chennai, showed idli and medu vada priced at around ₹33 each. Alongside these items, the bill included an additional line for a “gas charge” of ₹9.52, which many interpreted as a fee for the LPG used to cook the food. The unusual surcharge triggered criticism online, with users questioning whether restaurants were passing on rising fuel costs directly to customers.

However, the story took a different turn after fact checks were conducted. Analysts and journalists identified several inconsistencies in the viral receipt. For instance, the GST identification number on the bill contained only 14 characters, whereas a valid GSTIN must have 15. The bill also included spelling mistakes and formatting errors, which raised further doubts about its authenticity.

Investigations later confirmed that the bill circulating online was not genuine. Reports indicated that the document was artificially generated, likely using AI tools, and did not originate from the restaurant mentioned in the post. When reporters visited the establishment and purchased food, they found no such gas charge added to the bill. Restaurant staff also clarified that the viral image was fake.

Despite being fabricated, the viral post gained traction partly because it coincided with a real LPG supply crunch affecting restaurants and food vendors across India. The shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, linked to disruptions in global energy supply chains and conflicts in West Asia, has increased costs and forced some eateries to reduce menus or consider temporary price adjustments.

The incident highlights how quickly misinformation can spread online during times of economic stress. While the viral bill turned out to be fake, the broader concerns about rising fuel costs and their impact on food businesses remain very real.

As India continues to navigate the LPG supply challenges, experts say consumers should verify viral claims before sharing them, especially when they involve sensitive economic issues that can easily spark public outrage.
