Bengaluru Stampede: Police Flagged Security Concerns Before Tragedy

Introduction: A Tragic Turn of Events

On June 4, 2025, Bengaluru witnessed a devastating stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. The tragedy resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left over 50 injured. As investigations unfold, it has emerged that the Bengaluru City Police had raised significant security concerns prior to the event, concerns that were reportedly overlooked by state authorities.

Police Concerns Ignored

A letter from senior police officer MN Karibasavana Gowda to top government officials highlighted the risks associated with holding the RCB felicitation ceremony at Vidhana Soudha, the state legislature building. The letter pointed out the lack of time for proper preparation, insufficient security personnel, and the potential for overcrowding. Despite these warnings, the celebrations proceeded as planned, culminating in the tragic incident.

Political Fallout

The revelation of the police’s concerns has sparked a political firestorm. Opposition leaders, including JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy, have criticized the state government for prematurely approving the event. Kumaraswamy alleged that the approval was granted hours before the IPL final match, raising questions about the event’s planning and the government’s accountability.

BJP’s Strong Response

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism, accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of negligence. The BJP claims that the state leadership ignored the police’s warnings, leading to the tragic stampede. The party’s statements have further fuelled the political controversy surrounding the incident.

Investigation and Accountability

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Karnataka government has ordered an investigation into the incident. An FIR has been filed against the RCB management, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and DNA Entertainment, the event organizers, for alleged criminal negligence. The government has also suspended five police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, for failing to ensure adequate crowd control and security arrangements.

Conclusion

The Bengaluru stampede has highlighted serious lapses in event planning and public safety measures. The ignored warnings from the police and the subsequent tragedy have led to widespread criticism of the state government’s handling of the situation. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper preparation and coordination in managing large public events.
