The altercation began when a visitor to the Rabindra Memorial Museum engaged in a dispute with staff over a motorcycle parking fee. Following the disagreement, the visitor was reportedly confined and assaulted, leading to public outrage. On June 11, a group of approximately 40 individuals, allegedly linked to the visitor, forcibly entered the premises, damaging windows, furniture, and chanting slogans. While no major artworks or manuscripts were harmed, the attack disrupted the 19th-century building’s infrastructure and atmosphere.
Indian Government’s Response
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India swiftly condemned the act, describing it as a “despicable” and “violent” incident that dishonours Tagore’s legacy and the inclusive values he championed. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that such actions represent an attempt to erase important cultural and historical symbols promoting understanding and peace.
Political Reactions in India
The vandalism has elicited strong reactions from various political leaders in India. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the attack as a grave assault on cultural heritage and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with the Bangladeshi government to ensure justice. The Trinamool Congress also appealed for diplomatic intervention, highlighting the incident as a disrespect to Bengali heritage.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, for its inaction following the incident. The BJP attributed the attack to extremist groups Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam, describing it as a “pre-planned” assault.
