Mumbai Local Trains to Get 238 Automatic Door Systems as New Halts Added at Palghar and Boisar

Indian Railways has unveiled plans to enhance safety and commuter convenience across the Mumbai suburban rail network by installing automatic door systems on 238 newly procured local train rakes. The move forms part of a broader effort to modernise one of the world’s busiest suburban corridors and reduce accidents involving overcrowded trains.

The Union Railway Minister confirmed in Parliament that procurement for the automatic door mechanisms is already underway. These systems are expected to curb the risk of passengers falling from moving trains and to boost overall rail safety. The upgrades are part of a wide-ranging capacity expansion strategy intended to strengthen infrastructure and improve passenger amenities.

In addition to these safety enhancements, Indian Railways has also introduced several new stoppages at key stations in the Palghar district to better serve long-distance travellers. The Bandra Terminal to Bhuj Kutch Express now halts at Palghar, and the Sri Ganganagar to Dadar Express has been stopping there since mid-May this year. Furthermore, the Bandra Terminal to Ahmedabad Lok Shakti Express has been provided a halt at nearby Safale station, expanding travel options for commuters in the region.

Officials report that Palghar station currently hosts more than 100 train services each week, including suburban, passenger and express trains, while Boisar sees close to 100 services. These added halts aim to give local residents greater access to long-distance rail connections without having to travel to larger junctions.

The upgrades reflect Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to improving suburban travel on the Western and Central lines, where millions of commuters depend on daily local services. Passengers can expect enhanced comfort, reduced safety risks and improved connectivity as the new trains and service changes are rolled out in the coming months.
