- Modi calls the DMK government “CMC”, shorthand for Corruption, Mafia and Crime.
- Rally marks NDA’s major push ahead of the Tamil Nadu 2026 Assembly elections.
- Accusations focus on misgovernance, drug and liquor mafias and dynastic politics.
Tamil Nadu’s political landscape intensified as Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a forceful address at a National Democratic Alliance rally in Maduranthakam near Chennai, setting the stage for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Modi sharply criticised the present Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, asserting the state’s ruling party had lost public trust and was now widely seen as promoting corruption, mafia influence and crime.
In his speech, Modi introduced a new political label for the DMK, calling it the “CMC government”—an acronym he explained stood for Corruption, Mafia, and Crime. He claimed that widespread discontent among voters was evident in the massive turnout at the rally and suggested that the majority of people in Tamil Nadu are ready for a political change.
Modi accused the Stalin-led government of failing to govern effectively, and of fostering an environment where drug and liquor mafias could thrive unchecked, to the detriment of the state’s youth and families. He argued that instead of addressing these challenges, the administration had become entrenched in dynastic politics, serving the interests of a select few rather than the broader public.
The prime minister also emphasised the NDA’s development agenda, positioning a double-engine government—with BJP influence both at the state and central levels—as the solution for Tamil Nadu’s future progress. Modi claimed that central funds and welfare schemes had already benefited the state but implied further gains were possible under a new political dispensation.
Leaders from NDA allies, including AIADMK and AMMK, stood with him at the rally and echoed the criticism of the DMK’s record, adding political momentum to the campaign. With the 2026 polls approaching, the events in Maduranthakam signal an increasingly assertive strategy by the opposition coalition to unseat the current administration.
