• PM Modi held a telephone talk with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez to advance India-Venezuela ties.
• Both leaders agreed to expand cooperation across key sectors including trade, energy, and technology.
• The outreach reflects a strategic push by India to solidify relations with Latin American nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez engaged in a high-level telephone conversation on Friday, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Caracas. The discussion focused on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors and reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Modi took to the social platform X to share details of the exchange, highlighting a mutual commitment to “further deepen and expand our bilateral partnership in all areas”, with a shared objective of elevating India-Venezuela ties in the years ahead.

The call comes at a time of political change in Venezuela, where Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of Acting President earlier this month following the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces. This diplomatic engagement is the first official conversation between the Indian premier and Rodríguez since the leadership shift in Caracas.

India and Venezuela have maintained diplomatic relations for over six decades, with cooperation spanning energy, trade, and cultural exchanges. In their discussion, both leaders stressed the importance of expanding collaboration in key areas including trade and investment, energy security, technology solutions, and people-to-people ties. The dialogue also underscored shared views on regional and global issues of common interest.

The Modi-Rodríguez conversation aligns with India’s broader diplomatic strategy to enhance its engagement with Latin American countries, fostering economic linkages while navigating complex geopolitical developments. Analysts view this outreach as part of New Delhi’s efforts to diversify partnerships and deepen economic and political cooperation beyond traditional regions.

As India-Venezuela relations enter a renewed chapter, both governments have signaled readiness to pursue an action-oriented agenda that could lead to increased trade, strategic investments, and enhanced dialogue on global platforms in the coming years.
