- The incident is linked to ongoing security and intelligence tensions stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a recent development that has drawn global attention, Russian President Vladimir Putin reached out to thank the leader of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for his direct involvement in the detention of a man suspected of targeting a senior Russian military official.
According to statements from the Kremlin, Putin made the call on February 7, acknowledging the Emirati leader’s role in facilitating cooperation between security agencies that led to the apprehension of the suspect. The Russian president described the collaboration as effective and significant, especially in a case involving a high-ranking military figure.
The suspect, identified by Russian authorities as Lyubomir Korba, is a dual Ukrainian-Russian national suspected of carrying out a shooting attack on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence. Korba was arrested in Dubai before being extradited to Moscow, where he now faces charges related to the alleged attack.
The attempted assassination on Alexeyev occurred earlier this month in Moscow. Investigators say the general was shot multiple times but survived after emergency medical treatment. Several accomplices have been named, with at least one detained in Russia and another reportedly fleeing the country.
The UAE has not publicly disclosed details on how its authorities located or detained Korba, but Russia’s public recognition of the Emirati role signals a deepening level of cooperation between the two countries on security matters against a backdrop of mounting geopolitical tension.
The case has reverberated through the corridors of international relations, adding another chapter to the shadowy security dynamics tied to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict. Questions remain over motive and possible external involvement, as Kyiv has denied any role in the incident.
Political commentators say the incident and subsequent high-level diplomatic outreach reflect broader concerns over targeted attacks on military leadership and the complex interplay of intelligence operations amid ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
