The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust announced on Thursday that the extensive construction work at the Ram temple complex in Ayodhya is slated for completion by December 2024. This significant development marks a pivotal phase in the temple’s construction, which has already attracted nearly 75 lakh devotees since the consecration of the Ram Lalla idol on January 22.
Anil Mishra, a member of the temple trust, highlighted the current pace of construction, noting that approximately 1,500 workers are actively engaged on-site. To expedite progress on the temple’s remaining two floors, an additional workforce of over 3,500 workers is expected to be deployed shortly. The ground floor of the three-storey temple structure was completed in December of the previous year.
During a recent meeting of the temple construction committee, members committed to finalizing all construction activities within the Ram Janmabhoomi complex by the end of this year. Mishra elaborated on the temple’s layout, stating that the sanctum sanctorum is located on the ground floor, with the court of Lord Ram positioned on the first floor, enabling devotees to have a holistic darshan experience.
Rapid progress is being made on the construction of the temple’s main spire and another spire, with the completion of the peaks expected within 300 days. The temple will feature a total of five peaks, three of which were prepared ahead of the consecration ceremony. Notably, the main peak, standing at a height of 161 feet, will be adorned with a layer of gold.
Efforts are also underway to complete the ‘parkota’ or protective wall of the temple before the onset of the monsoon season, ensuring that devotees are shielded from rain and sunlight. Alongside the parkota, temples dedicated to six deities and seven sages will be constructed, further enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the complex.
The construction giant L&T is spearheading the project, deploying a skilled workforce from across Indian states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The complex will also feature temples commemorating Hindu saints as described in ancient religious texts, including Valmiki, Vashishtha, Vishwamitra, Agastya, Nishadraj, and Ahilya.
To accommodate the growing influx of devotees, Ayodhya’s District Magistrate Nitish Kumar revealed plans to widen the road from Tedhi Bazaar to a post office by 15 meters. This infrastructure upgrade aims to improve access and manage the increasing visitor numbers, which surge to over two lakh on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as per Prakash Gupta, an officer in charge of the Ram temple trust.
