Cairn’s Commitment to Methane Reduction and Net Zero
Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group, has made history as the first Indian oil and gas company to join the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) OGMP 2.0 initiative. This partnership supports Cairn’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 by setting transparent methane reduction targets within a five-year framework.
OGMP 2.0 is UNEP’s flagship methane monitoring initiative, guiding global oil and gas producers to adopt accurate methane measurement and reduction strategies. Under its MoU with UNEP, Cairn will utilize OGMP’s science-based framework to report and reduce methane emissions effectively, supporting global climate goals like the Paris Agreement and the Global Methane Pledge.
A Transformational Step for India’s Energy Sector
The initiative has set a new standard for India’s oil and gas industry, representing a significant step toward improved environmental stewardship and transparency. According to Giulia Ferrini, OGMP 2.0 Programme Manager, Cairn’s commitment is expected to encourage other Indian companies to adopt similar measures, amplifying methane reduction across the industry.
Hitesh Vaid, Cairn’s CFO, emphasized that the company’s comprehensive ESG strategy, including renewable energy integration and carbon capture, underscores its commitment to sustainable practices and India’s energy security. Over the past four years, Cairn has already reduced gas flaring by 60%, advancing towards its net-zero goals through process optimization and the adoption of low-carbon technologies.
Pioneering Sustainable Energy Practices in India
This collaboration marks a milestone for India’s upstream oil and gas sector by enhancing methane transparency and management. Cairn’s OGMP 2.0 membership represents a shift toward more sustainable energy practices within India, setting a benchmark that aligns with both national and global environmental objectives.
