Posted by

Key Points:

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasizes dialogue with Israel and Iran to promote peace and communication.
  • India condemns terrorism and large-scale civilian casualties while supporting a ceasefire and the two-state solution for Palestine.
  • India’s significant economic and cultural ties with West Asia underscore its call for diplomacy and de-escalation.

How is India Addressing the West Asia Crisis?

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, India is actively engaging with both Israel and Iran, urging restraint at the highest diplomatic levels. Speaking at the Rome Mediterranean Dialogue 2024, Jaishankar reiterated India’s condemnation of terrorism and hostage-taking. He also stressed the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and minimizing civilian casualties during military operations.

India has extended direct relief and support through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and backs a long-term resolution for Palestinians via a two-state solution. The Indian Navy has also been deployed in strategic areas like the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea to protect commercial shipping amidst regional instability.

What About India’s Broader Diplomatic Stance?

Jaishankar highlighted India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy in ongoing global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal outreach to both Russia and Ukraine exemplifies India’s commitment to peaceful solutions. With an annual trade of $80 billion with Mediterranean nations and over $160 billion with the Gulf region, India’s economic interests and historical ties make stability in these areas crucial.

The Bigger Picture

India’s proactive stance reflects its significant stake in West Asia and the Mediterranean, not only in economic terms but also in cultural and security connections. As tensions rise, India’s diplomatic efforts aim to bridge gaps and contribute meaningfully to peace-building initiatives. Will the region respond to India’s calls for restraint and dialogue? Only time will tell, but India’s balanced approach underscores its role as a key player in global diplomacy.
