Who Will Be Delhi’s Next Chief Minister? Is BJP Planning a Surprise Move?

Posted by

  • The race for Delhi’s Chief Minister is heating up, with speculation over whether BJP will select a woman for the top post.
  • The party has a history of picking fresh and relatively lesser-known faces for the CM position in other states.
  • Several names are in the spotlight, including Shikha Roy, Rekha Gupta, Smriti Irani, Bansuri Swaraj, Poonam Sharma, and Neelam Pahelwan.

Will Delhi Get Its Fourth Woman Chief Minister?

As Delhi eagerly awaits the announcement of its new Chief Minister, a key question arises: Will the national capital have a woman CM for the fourth time? With several women leaders emerging as strong contenders, the possibility cannot be ruled out. BJP has previously surprised political observers by choosing unexpected names for CM positions in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Odisha. Will Delhi follow the same pattern?

Some political experts believe that the BJP may choose a leader with a ‘Purvanchal’ background, a Sikh leader, or a woman, depending on its electoral strategy. This decision could significantly impact the party’s appeal among different voter groups in the city.

Who Are the Top Contenders?

Several BJP leaders are being considered for the role. Among the top names are:

  • Shikha Roy – The BJP leader defeated AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj in the Greater Kailash constituency in the 2025 Delhi elections.
  • Rekha Gupta – She secured victory in the Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes.
  • Smriti Irani – A former Union minister in the Modi cabinet, Smriti Irani recently lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi.
  • Bansuri Swaraj – Daughter of late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the New Delhi constituency.
  • Poonam Sharma – She emerged victorious in the Wazirpur assembly seat, defeating AAP’s Rajesh Gupta by 11,425 votes.
  • Neelam Pahelwan – She won from Najafgarh, defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar by 29,009 votes.

With so many strong contenders in the race, Delhi’s political future hangs in balance. If BJP opts for a woman leader, it will mark the fourth time in history that the national capital will be led by a female Chief Minister. The final decision, however, rests with the party’s top leadership. Will BJP continue its trend of surprising choices? The answer will soon unfold.
