  • Air India flight AI185 returned to Delhi after over 7 hours in the air
  • Aircraft made a U-turn while flying over Chinese airspace
  • Operational and regulatory issues suspected behind the disruption

An international flight operated by Air India faced an unexpected disruption after it was forced to turn back mid-air during its journey from Delhi to Vancouver. The incident, which unfolded on March 19, left passengers stranded after hours of flying with no progress toward their destination.

The flight, AI185, had departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport and was en route to Canada when the crew decided to return. According to flight tracking data, the aircraft had already been airborne for more than seven hours and was flying over Chinese airspace when it made a U-turn and headed back to Delhi.

Air India later confirmed that the decision was taken due to an “operational issue” and in accordance with standard safety procedures. The airline assured that the aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew disembarked without any incident.

However, aviation sources suggest that the disruption may have been caused by a regulatory oversight. Reports indicate that the airline deployed a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft for the route, even though only certain aircraft variants are approved to operate flights into Canadian airspace. This mismatch reportedly forced the aircraft to abort its journey mid-flight.

The unexpected return resulted in significant inconvenience for passengers, many of whom spent long hours onboard before landing back at their departure point. The airline arranged assistance, including accommodation and rebooking, and later operated another flight to Vancouver to transport affected travelers.

The incident has also raised concerns about operational planning and compliance within the airline. Experts note that international aviation routes require strict adherence to aircraft-specific clearances, and even minor lapses can lead to costly disruptions and reputational damage.

While no safety issues were reported, the episode has drawn attention to the importance of rigorous checks in long-haul operations, especially on high-demand international routes.
