- Tarique Rahman likely to take charge as next Prime Minister
- Election marks first major democratic transition after 2024 political upheaval
Bangladesh has delivered a decisive political verdict in the 2026 general elections, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party emerging as the clear winner after securing more than a two thirds majority in parliament. The sweeping victory paves the way for party leader Tarique Rahman to assume office as the next Prime Minister.
According to official results released on Friday, the BNP won over 200 seats in the 299 constituencies that went to polls on February 12, comfortably crossing the majority mark required to form the government.
The election marks the party’s return to power after nearly two decades and signals a major shift in the country’s political landscape following months of unrest and economic disruption.
The polls were the first to be conducted since the political uprising in 2024 that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office. The transitional phase that followed was overseen by an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Rahman, who recently returned from a long period of exile, now faces the immediate challenge of restoring stability and boosting investor confidence while addressing economic concerns such as inflation and employment. His leadership is expected to focus on governance reforms and rebuilding key sectors of the national economy.
With the formation of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad underway, the BNP is set to establish the next government, marking the beginning of a new political chapter in Bangladesh as the country transitions into a post Hasina era.
