NEW DELHI – Get ready to reimagine overnight train travel in India. AlwaysFirst has obtained the first official glimpses of the interior of the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, and the designs promise a quantum leap in passenger comfort and modern aesthetics. Moving beyond the successful chair-car model, these new sleeper coaches are poised to transform long-distance rail journeys into an experience reminiscent of luxury air travel.
The newly released images reveal a cabin environment that is a stark departure from conventional Indian Railways coaches. Drawing direct inspiration from aircraft interiors, the design focuses on a sleek, unified aesthetic. Passengers will be greeted by ergonomically designed seats and berths, upholstered in premium materials, and a coordinated colour scheme that exudes sophistication. The use of intelligent, automated mood lighting is set to enhance the onboard ambiance, adjusting for different times of the day to reduce passenger fatigue.
A key focus of the new design is a palpable increase in personal space and privacy. The compartments appear more streamlined and less cramped, with dedicated spaces for passenger luggage. Every detail, from the streamlined ladders for upper berths to the design of the reading lamps and modular tables, has been meticulously planned for both functionality and a modern look. The overall impression is that of a “hotel on wheels,” aiming to provide a tranquil and comfortable environment for journeys that span the night.
While an official launch date is yet to be announced by the Indian Railways, the rollout of the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant is highly anticipated for 2024. The trains are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Once operational, they are expected to run on key long-distance routes, connecting major metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru at significantly higher speeds than current overnight trains, effectively shrinking travel time across the Indian subcontinent. This initiative represents a crucial step in the national transporter’s mission to modernize its fleet and offer a world-class travel experience to millions of Indians.
