The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced its candidates for the anticipated by-elections in West Bengal’s Bhagwangola and Baranagar Assembly constituencies. In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its presence in the region, the party has chosen Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Sajal Ghosh as its contender for Baranagar and Bhaskar Sarkar for Bhagwangola. Ghosh, a seasoned party member, brings extensive experience and local insight to the electoral contest, while Sarkar, with his roots in the youth wing of the Trinamul Congress and current role as Bhagwangola’s mandal president, offers a mix of organizational strength and community engagement.
This announcement coincides with the Election Commission of India’s decision to align the by-elections with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, setting the stage for a politically charged environment in both constituencies. Bhagwangola is slated for election on May 7, followed by Baranagar on June 1. The vacancy in Baranagar was precipitated by the departure of former TMC MLA Tapas Roy to the BJP, triggering the need for a by-election, while Bhagwangola’s seat opened following the passing of TMC MLA Idrish Ali.
As the BJP aims to consolidate its influence in West Bengal, a state where political dynamics have been fluid since the 2021 Assembly elections, these by-elections emerge as a critical battleground. With former BJP legislators returning to the TMC fold, the party’s resolve to make inroads in the region is more pronounced than ever. The coming weeks are expected to witness an intense political campaign, with both constituencies at the heart of a fervent electoral contest.
