- BJP releases first list of 144 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections.
- Suvendu Adhikari named candidate from Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee’s constituency.
- The elections for 294 seats will be held in two phases in April.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, signaling the start of an intense political contest in the state. The announcement includes several prominent leaders and sets the stage for key electoral battles across multiple constituencies.
One of the most notable decisions in the list is the nomination of Suvendu Adhikari from the Bhabanipur constituency. The seat is currently represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and is considered a stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress. The move has sparked discussions about a possible high profile face off between the two leaders in the upcoming polls.
Adhikari has also been fielded from Nandigram, a politically significant seat where he defeated Banerjee in the 2021 Assembly elections by a narrow margin. His candidacy from two constituencies reflects the party’s strategy to strengthen its challenge against the ruling government.
The BJP’s first candidate list covers nearly half of the total seats in the state assembly, which has 294 constituencies. According to the election schedule, voting will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
Apart from Adhikari, several other senior leaders have been included in the list as the party prepares for a competitive campaign against the Trinamool Congress. Political analysts say the early announcement of candidates indicates the BJP’s intention to intensify its preparations and mobilize support well ahead of polling day.
With the ruling party aiming to retain power and the BJP seeking to expand its footprint in the state, the West Bengal Assembly elections are expected to witness a fierce contest. The potential clash between Adhikari and Banerjee in Bhabanipur could become one of the most closely watched battles of the election season.
