A strong and shallow earthquake has jolted northern Japan, triggering urgent tsunami alerts and putting coastal communities on high alert. The seismic event, which struck on Tuesday, registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake’s epicenter was located off the eastern coast of Aomori prefecture, at a relatively shallow depth. The tremors were strongly felt across several prefectures in the northern region. In response, the JMA swiftly issued a tsunami warning, advising residents in vulnerable coastal areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground.
Initial reports indicate that tsunami waves have already begun arriving. Observers have recorded waves reaching approximately 40 centimeters in Kuji City, Iwate, with the potential for larger waves to follow. “All residents must evacuate from coastal areas immediately. Do not stop until you reach a safe, elevated location,” urged local broadcasters, interrupting regular programming.
This latest tremor adds to the seismic activity in an area still deeply mindful of the catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami. While the current warnings are not on the same scale, Japanese authorities are treating the situation with utmost seriousness. Residents are being warned to stay away from the shore and prepare for possible aftershocks in the hours and days ahead.
