Dehradun police have offered fresh details about the tragic death of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma, saying the violent incident that ultimately claimed his life stemmed from a heated dispute rather than a planned or racially driven attack.
According to senior police officials, the confrontation unfolded during a casual gathering in the Selaqui area on December 9, when an argument broke out between two groups of young men. Officers described the situation as a moment of confusion that quickly escalated, resulting in Chakma being stabbed.
Chakma, an MBA student who had been studying in Dehradun, was rushed to hospital following the assault. He battled severe injuries for 17 days before succumbing on December 26. Police have since arrested five people in connection with the case, while a sixth suspect remains on the run and is being actively sought by authorities.
Despite widespread social media speculation and initial claims from family members that racial slurs played a role, police have so far found no concrete evidence linking the attack to racial prejudice. Officials said they have reviewed CCTV footage and witness accounts but have not unearthed any proof of racial motivation in the confrontation.
Investigators emphasize that the clash appears to have arisen from a dispute during a social interaction that escalated tragically. Police continue to probe all angles of the case and are committed to ensuring justice through a thorough and transparent inquiry.
As the investigation progresses, the family and community await further clarity on the events that led to the death of the young student, amid calls for accountability and discussions on student safety in shared educational spaces.
