Delhi Metro Fares Get a Steeper Climb: First Price Hike in Eight Years Comes Into Effect

Key Highlights:

  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has implemented a fare increase across its network, the first such hike in eight years.
  • The revised structure raises the minimum token fare to ₹20 and the maximum to ₹60, while smart card users will see a slightly lower rate.
  • The adjustment is attributed to rising operational costs, including electricity and maintenance, necessary to maintain service quality.

NEW DELHI – In a move that will impact millions of daily commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has rolled out a revised fare structure, marking the end of an eight-year-long price freeze. The new fares came into effect this week, making metro travel in the National Capital Region (NCR) more expensive.

The last fare revision for Asia’s one of the largest metro networks occurred in 2017. Since then, the DMRC has absorbed rising input costs, but officials cite escalating expenses related to energy, infrastructure maintenance, and operational overheads as the primary drivers for this long-anticipated hike.

Under the new pricing model, the cost of a journey has seen a incremental but noticeable rise. Passengers purchasing journey tokens will now pay a minimum fare of ₹20, up from ₹10, for distances up to 2 kilometers. The maximum fare for a single journey has been capped at ₹60 for a travel distance exceeding 32 kilometers.

In a continued incentive to promote digital and sustainable travel, commuters using smart cards will still benefit from a discount. The minimum smart card fare is now set at ₹10 for the first 2 km, with the maximum fare reaching ₹50.

“The decision was not taken lightly,” a source within the DMRC stated. “Maintaining the high standards of safety, cleanliness, and frequency that Delhi Metro is known for requires significant investment. This revision is essential to ensure the system remains financially sustainable and can continue to serve the city efficiently.”

The Delhi Metro is the backbone of public transportation in the NCR, ferrying over five million passengers on weekdays. While the fare hike is a minor burden on individual wallets, it is a critical step for the DMRC to manage its operational deficit and fund future expansion projects without compromising on the quality of service that commuters have come to rely on.

Commuters are advised to check the official DMRC website or station notices for the detailed revised fare chart to plan their travel accordingly.
